The Cultural Center of Batahola Norte’s goal is to increase economic independence, individual dignity and help discovery of both individual skills and the talents of women and youth in the community. Nicaragua’s national unemployment rate is 55% for working-age people and 66% for women. Unemployment forces heads of family to do whatever they can to survive. The Cultural Center works to combat these statistics with adult training programs.

To develop self-esteem and provide skills that facilitate entry into the labor market, the Center offers 12 courses in basic, technical, and domestic education.

These career-oriented courses are offered with official government recognition provided through contracts with INATEC (The National Technical Institute).

Courses respond to changes in the economy and the labor market. The current program of study includes:

The Center opens its doors for all residents from many surrounding areas of Managua. Overall enrollment breakdown is 76% women and 24% men. The average student is a young woman, in many cases a single mother who is struggling to improve her own and her children’s lives. More than 800 adults and children come to the Center each year to receive classes.

Contributions to Batahola support these young women who travel from many surrounding settlements for the after school and Saturday classes in their pursuit of better lives for their families.
